One of the most common options of treatment for tumor is surgery. Surgeries can be divided into two main groups - biopsy and tumor removal.
Biopsy
Biopsy is the main diagnostic method that confirms the type of tumor. Biopsies can be performed in four different techniques. The most popular one is aspiration biopsy. This procedure is based on injection of needle into the tumor and taking the sample of its withdrawn. The second biopsy technique is called needle biopsy. The special cutting needle is inserted into the core of tumor and the sample of tumor tissue is taken. Later the sample of tumor is examined in histological laboratory. The third type of biopsy is incisional biopsy. During this procedure the part of huge tumor is removed for histological examination. Procedure is performed before the complete tumor removal. And finally the fourth technique is excisional biopsy. It is the procedure, when the whole lesion with surrounding healthy tissues is removed.
Complete Tumor Removal
Surgery is the only way to remove whole tumor. This procedure is always performed by experienced oncologic surgeon. During the surgery whole tumor and some healthy surrounding tissues of it are removed. The additional healthy tissues are removed with a purpose to minimize the risk of recurrence of tumor. It is noticeable that surgical treatment for tumor requires pre-surgical and postoperative care. Radiation therapy, chemotherapy and even hormone therapy can be prescribed before and after tumor treatment with surgery.
